Why has Windows gotten worse over the years?

Windows has arguably declined in quality over the years due to several factors:

Microsoft has shifted focus towards maximizing profits through:

  • Intrusive user tracking and data collection
  • Aggressive promotion of Microsoft services and products
  • Pushing users into the Microsoft subscription ecosystem

This approach often comes at the expense of a smooth, customizable user experience that many long-time Windows users prefer as well as increasing monthly upkeep and maintenance costs.

In an attempt to create a “safe for everyone” environment, Microsoft has:

  • Removed or hidden advanced settings and customization options
  • Simplified interfaces, often at the cost of functionality
  • Introduced features with questionable benefits for experienced users

Windows 11 suffers from:

  • A mix of old and new design elements, creating a disjointed experience
  • Performance issues, particularly with File Explorer
  • Arbitrary hardware requirements that exclude many capable systems

Microsoft’s push towards a more mobile-like experience has led to:

  • A redesigned Start menu and taskbar that many find less functional
  • Increased reliance on Microsoft subscription accounts and cloud services
  • Automatic updates that can disrupt workflow and introduce unwanted changes

Windows 11 comes preloaded with:

  • Many apps that users may not want or need
  • Difficulty in removing some pre-installed applications

These issues have contributed to a slower adoption rate for Windows 11 compared to previous versions, indicating user dissatisfaction with the direction Microsoft has taken, and will continue to take to maximise profits…
